3. Nick Johnson – Arizona Wildcats (2012-2014)

Career stats: 12.3 ppg 3.7 rpg 2.8 apg

After two years as more of a role player, Johnson had an All-American season his junior year, averaging 16.3 ppg and 4.1 rpg. Only three times did he not score in double figures, with 11 games of at least 20 points. Not only did he lead the Wildcats to a 33-5 record and an Elite Eight appearance, but Johnson himself was rewarded with Pac-12 Player of the Year Award.

2. DeAndre Ayton – Arizona Wildcats (2018)

Career stats: 20.1 ppg 11.6 rpg 1.6 apg

In just one season, Ayton may have been the most dominant player this past season not named Trae Young. He was one of the country’s leaders in double-doubles with 24, with a 26 point and 20 rebound game against Cal (which came after him sitting out after news broke that he may have taken $100,00 under the table). Ayton has a number of school records for a freshman and performed above the already high expectations for when the High School All-American first arrived.

1. Derrick Williams – Arizona Wildcats (2010-2011)

Career stats: 17.8 ppg 7.7 rpg 0.9 apg

After a great freshman season, Williams elected to return for his sophomore year for Arizona. That turned out to be a great decision, with him averaging 19.5 ppg and 8.3 rpg in route to winning the 2011 Pac-12 Player of the Year, as well as All-American mentions.

What gets Williams the nod over Ayton was his performance that year in the NCAA Tournament. While the big man went out with a whimper, Williams made crucial plays to help the Wildcats advance. His program-defining moment came against Duke in the Sweet Sixteen, where he had a career-high 32 points and 13 rebounds. That game allowed him to shoot up the NBA Draft boards, as well as the rankings of Miller’s best players.
