Pepperdine Basketball: In-depth look at Waves Guard Colbey Ross
By Bryan Mauro
Why You Should Know Ross
The sophomore guard who makes his way to Malibu via Colorado had one of the best freshman seasons in Pepperdine history. Not only were his numbers tops for Pepperdine, but also some of the tops in the West Coast Conference and nationally. The 5.7 assists per game were good for second in the conference as well as 37th nationally. He ended up leading all freshman in the conference in scoring and assists.
Ross can score from all three levels with tremendous efficiency. With his 14 points per game average, he shot three-pointers at a 42% clip. He also was deadly inside the paint at the free throw line. The guard supplements his scoring by racking up assists. He had a total of 179 assists last year which is the most in a season at Pepperdine since 2000. The 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio was good for fifth in the conference. With the sure amount of times the sophomore guard touches the ball, the fact he can provide all this offense without turning the ball over is going to huge boost for coach Romar the Waves going into the current season.
Fans are always drawn to exciting polarizing players. Ross is exactly that, there is seemingly nothing he can not do on the floor. He will also provide steals and play defense. Pepperdine did only win six games last year, so Ross is the one player on the floor who always stood out. Even if the Waves had a better season last year, the guard still would have stood out and been listed as one of the best players in the conference. Ross and the rest of the fans in Malibu are hoping that a new coach and system helps the Waves creep up the West Coast Conference Standings.
