Point Guard

Minutes Breakdown (40 total): Joseph Chartouny (24), Markus Howard (10), Greg Elliott (6)

Joseph Chartouny, a grad transfer from Fordham, will soak up the bulk of the minutes at the point guard position for Marquette in 2018-19. The former Ram could not be more different from last year’s point guard Andrew Rowsey.

While Rowsey provided elite scoring and spectacular highlight plays, he also stood just 5-foot-10 and was an absolute turnstile on defense. Chartouny, meanwhile, is a sturdy 6-foot-3 with a bandit mentality at the top of a defense. He finished inside the top two in steal rate each of the past two seasons and averaged 5.2 assists per game during his career. In fact, Chartouny was one of only four players to total at least 430 assists in less than 90 games over the last three seasons. With so many weapons already in tow, Marquette doesn’t need much offense from its new acquisition, though his shooting should tick upwards with opponents shifting so much attention towards Markus Howard and the elder Hauser.

However, Chartouny will not average anywhere near the 36 minutes he played for a hapless Fordham squad last year. Even though Howard excelled off the ball during his first two campaigns, Wojo will still want to give his star guard an opportunity to show off what he learned this summer at the Chris Paul Elite Guard Camp.

The sophomore Greg Elliott will also siphon off some point guard minutes this season when Chartouny is on the bench and Howard is nominally at the shooting guard spot. Elliott dished just 48 total assists in 18 minutes per game last year, but should be more comfortable with the ball after undergoing hand surgery following the 2017-18 season.
