No. 25-21

25. Marquette (28th in efficiency, 27th in tourney)

When Buzz Williams left for Virginia Tech, he left Marquette humming along nicely, finishing with a top 30 efficiency rating each year from 2009-2013. However, recent results have been lacking under Steve Wojciechowski, still unable to elevate the program to the next level, a program without an NCAA tournament win since their 2013 Elite eight run.

24. Connecticut (39th in efficiency, 5th in tourney)

How a team with two NCAA championships in the last decade is 24th can simply be explained by very lackluster results in the last few years. A 14-18 effort in 2018 (161st in the ratings) torpedoed UConn’s ranking, with Kevin Ollie out after six years in Storrs.

23. Kansas State (24th in efficiency, 24th in tourney)

Coming off a surprise Elite Eight run, Kansas State remains a consistent program, though seemingly forever living in the shadow of Kansas and Wichita State. While Bruce Weber isn’t as highly regarded as predecessor Frank Martin, the Wildcats have been a top 50 team all but one season this past decade.

22. Virginia (21st in efficiency, 28th in tourney)

U Must Be Crazy! Tony Bennett is building something special at Virginia, but the tournament success has yet to happen. Virginia’s ranking would be much higher had we neglected a rough stretch from 2009-2011 before Bennett could really start to impose his footprint on this program.

21. Butler (32nd in efficiency, 10th in tourney)

What a decade for Butler, clearly highlighted by their two NCAA title game appearances, which really boost a former mid-major. Across three conferences and under four head coaches, the Butler Way has gained considerable steam, landing them just outside the top 20.
