Esa Ahmad rises to the occasion

After sitting out the first half of last season due to a suspension, many expected that Esa Ahmad would immediately return as one of the top offensive options for the team. After all, he did post a strong sophomore campaign in 2016-17 (11.3 points per game) and growth was to be expected. Yet, he struggled to get into a groove last season once rejoining the team and was not as effective as many originally thought even though his counting stats were still solid (10.2 points per game).

Now as one of the top returning offensive options this season, though, Ahmad might be ready to take the reigns as a scorer. An athletic 6-foot-8 wing, Ahmad can do it all on the offensive end when he is at his best. He can finish strong around the basket, consistently knock down shots from the perimeter, and is also improving as a playmaker. In terms of his offensive potential, Ahmad could be the most likely player to lead the team in scoring this season if he posts 15+ points per game.

If Ahmad is able to hit his potential this season offensively, then West Virginia should be in great shape. The Mountaineers have top-15 potential this season and he is a major reason why. Even though he might not be an “elite-level” defender like some of his teammates, Ahmad’s value to the team’s overall potential makes him incredibly incredible.
