Expectations for 2018-19

It’s hard to find a mid-major program in a better spot than UNCG. There’s just so much to like about this team! Coach Wes Miller is a young coach committed long-term to the program. Miller’s team ranked top in the conference and among the nations best defensively. And they have the Spaniard star Francis Alonzo and defensive menace James Dickey, both just as good as they are enjoyable to watch.

The Southern Conference has been able to continue on as a quality mid-major league after Davidson bolted for the A10 following the 2013-14 season. No team has won the conference by more than just a game separation. But, with East Tennessee St. and Furman both losing several of its top scorers, only Wofford appears to be a serious threat at UNCG ending that steak.

Maybe one of the only potential concerns for the Spartans would be a that this team might not be quite as deep or dynamic last season. Jordy Kuiper and Marvin Smith both gave marvelous efforts not only their senior seasons but stretching back a few years. Coach Miller will need to get his team to play fantastic defense again even without these two.

While it would be tough to improve on such a dazzling 2017-18 campaign, it’s hard not to hope UNCG can do so. It will take a lot for Coach Miller’s team to get into another position to score a potential upset in March. But, with all the positive momentum of this program, don’t be surprised if it happens this time.
