Big 12 Basketball: Preseason Player of the Year candidates for 2018-19
By Chris Kern
Jaylen Fisher
Jaylen Fisher has been a solid point guard during his first two seasons with the Horned Frogs. He averaged 12.3 points and 5.4 assists per game last season. His season was cut short due to injury though, as he played in just 17 games last season.
He does have another talented guard in Alex Robinson paired in the backcourt with him. Who averaged 9.7 points and 6.1 assists per game.
Fisher might be the ultimate dark horse on this list. He is a talented player for sure, but his health is a big question mark. He had another knee surgery though he is expected to be ready for the season opener on Nov. 7th.
If he can get and stay healthy he has a shot at this award. If he is, in fact, ready to go for the season opener he should be rolling by the time conference play comes award. There’s no need to rush him back though as all he needs to be ready for is conference play.
Jaylen Fisher’s Big 12 Player Of The Year campaign is all about his health and the teams’ success. Last years team was one of the best TCU teams they’ve had in a long time and they finished 5th in the conference with a 9-9 record. It’s hard to imagine that they will do much better than that but if they do and finish among the top three teams or so in the Big 12, then Fisher has a shot to bring home the award.
