“Virginia lost to a No. 16 seed last year…” Blah, blah, blah. Yes, the Cavaliers were embarrassed in the NCAA Tournament lasts season but let’s not use that as an excuse to overlook how talented the team is heading into this year. With Kyle Guy and De’Andre Hunter, among others, back for more, head coach Tony Bennett has more than enough talent to land another No. 1 seed. And maybe, just maybe, they will avenge last season’s horrors.

At the No. 2 seed, Tennessee might be the most dangerous team in the country this year because no one quite knows what their ceiling is. The Volunteers were arguably the most pleasant surprise in the nation last season and they return just about everyone. Will Tennessee take another leap this year and maybe land a No. 1 seed? Or did we see the best of them last season? We will soon find out.

In regards to dark horses in this region, St. John’s immediately stands out. With far more talent than what the No. 11 seed above may indicate, a strong coaching season by Chris Mullin and Co. could pay major dividends. Now with Mustapha Heron eligible and Justin Simon/Shamorie Ponds returning, the Red Storm have arguably the best backcourt in the nation. Can the coaching staff maximize the potential of this roster?

For Iowa State, the dynamic sophomore duo of Lindell Wigginton and Cameron Lard will lead the way along with do-it-all senior Nick Weiler-Babb. Definitely a potential breakout team.
