NCAA Basketball: 3 thoughts on AP Top 25 poll (Week 2)
3. Kentucky drops down the rankings
The team with the most damaging fall was West Virginia. Last week, they were ranked, ready to seize the day post-Jevon Carter. Then, they lost at home in overtime to a good Buffalo team (who now find themselves in the top 25).
The Mountaineers now find themselves in the dreaded “Others Receiving Votes” category. But the biggest fall contained within the top 25 came courtesy of the Kentucky Wildcats.
They started the season ranked a lofty No. 2, which seemed like a stretch for this group of Wildcats, even with their strong recruiting class.
Then they showed up to opening night in body, but not in spirit, getting shellacked by a Duke squad just as young as they are, if not younger. It was one of the worst losses of John Calipari’s tenure in Lexington.
Kentucky’s second game of the season resulted in a victory, but the 12-point win over Southern Illinois didn’t do much to alleviate the early concerns with this team, now ranked No. 10 in the country.
This week should be an easy one for Kentucky, as the host both North Dakota and VMI as part of their lackluster non-conference schedule.
It’s hard to imagine them losing again before they play North Carolina prior to Christmas.
