Georgetown basketball has struggled to gain any momentum so far this season. Despite entering the year with some serious hype due to their returning cast and highly-touted recruiting class, the Hoyas have seemingly been unable to hit those expectations to this point. And this does not mean that Georgetown has been “bad”, per se, but they have struggled a bit. Through the first month of the season, the Hoyas stand at 8-3 overall while having played the 243rd-toughest schedule in the nation (per KenPom).
This is far from elite play and their best win to date came on the road against Illinois. They have also suffered losses to Loyola-Marymount, Syracuse, and SMU. After starting the season ranked at No. 55 by KenPom, they have now dropped out of the top-100 and are ranked as the worst team in the Big East. This has clearly been a disappointing start for head coach Patrick Ewing and Co. but the talent is definitely still there on the roster.
The problem is, though, that considering their relatively weak strength of record, making the NCAA Tournament is a steep climb from here. This is especially true when you consider the Big East does not pose as many “elite” opportunities as it has in the past. The Hoyas have been led so far this season by senior Jessie Govan (18.5 points, 7.7 rebounds) and freshman James Akinjo (13.6 points, 4.5 assists).
