Big East Basketball: Key 2018-19 storylines for Marquette at Georgetown
No. 3: The battle between centers Jessie Govan and Theo John
Tuesdays game will feature an under-the-radar battle between two big men who are amongst the best in their craft.
On the offensive end, that would be Georgetown senior center Jessie Govan. Govan is averaging 20 points and eight rebounds per game on the season, and carried the Hoyas on Saturday, dropping 33 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Meanwhile in Milwaukee, Marquette center Theo John has asserted himself as the best defensive center, or even best defensive player overall, in the Big East. John is averaging a league-best two blocks per game on defensive. John blocked six shots in Marquette’s win over Buffalo, and has a way of coming up big in big games, as he recorded a double-double of his own in Marquette’s last game.
Govan is the apex of the Georgetown offense, with it running through him. John will be tasked with stifling Govan, and if he’s successful, Georgetown is going to have a really, really hard time winning this game.
Theo John is your perfect beyond-the-box score guy, a gritty defender whose effort and hustle on defense makes him invaluable for Marquette. John will face his biggest task of the season on Tuesday, but if you’ve ever watched Theo John play, you know he’ll be up to the task.
Marquette and Georgetown, while they have completely different season outlooks, are meeting at just the right time on Tuesday. Both teams are fully healthy, have momentum, and are looking for a big, big win. Tuesday is going to be a high-scoring, exciting battle between two of the Big East’s better teams.
