West (Anaheim)

1. Gonzaga (2)

For my money, Gonzaga is the best team in the country. The foursome of Josh Perkins, Zach Norvell, Rui Hachimura, and Brandon Clarke is by far the best offensive unit in the nation. Pundits belly-ache about their schedule, but the Zags are the only team to beat a healthy Duke. And, even though the WCC is fielding near-division-2 talent, Gonzaga is absolutely obliterating them (outscoring conference foes by 27 points per game). There’s something to be said for going undefeated in your conference AND psychologically manhandling them. My pick for a title-winner as of now.

2. North Carolina (7)

While Roy Williams is falling down, Carolina is trending way up. This club has near-perfect chemistry and plays confidently. Cam Johnson and Luke Maye are unafraid veterans who can stroke the three ball. And Coby White: James Harden with an afro. Add in a dash of Nassir Little and we are looking at a true contender. After playing perhaps the most difficult schedule in the country, and raking up scores of Q1-2 wins, Carolina should be locked in as a two.

3. Kansas (11)

Bill Self’s Big 12 reign appears to be expiring, and Kansas is without its second and third best players (Lagerald Vick and Udoka Azubuike). Dedric Lawson is their only hope in this dire and scandal-ridden time. However, Kansas’ recent woes don’t take away from a tremendous non-conference resume–which includes wins over Michigan State and Tennessee. Won’t drop below the four-line, but are a three for now.

4. Marquette (14)

Wojo and his Golden Eagles are soaring this year behind the programs’ best player since Dwayne Wade–dynamo point guard Markus Howard, who scores over 25 per game. The Hauser brothers are perfect complements, and this club will simply out-score some postseason opponents. A fun, fun watch. I suggest you do so while the opportunity presents itself.
