March Madness 2019: Takeaways from second weekend of NCAA Tournament
By Josh Stevens
Sweet 16 (Friday games)
Friday again had a bore fest in the opening game as Michigan State tore apart LSU 80-63. Then although Auburn crushed North Carolina 97-80 it was the first real upset in the tournament. Chuma Okeke who was the best player on the court that night was injured badly that was tough to watch, but it may have inspired the Tigers to keep fighting, and boy did they ever. Then just like Thursday there were two games that just made you stop and think, this is what March is all about.
Kentucky beat Houston 62-58 and Duke beat Virginia Tech 75-73. Kentucky led by 11 at the half, and then the come back happened. Kentucky went completely dry from the field until Tyler Herro happened. With ice in his veins the fate of Kentucky’s season on his shoulders he stepped up took the shot and made it look easy. I did not think the Duke game could live up to the height that this game just did, boy was I wrong. I tuned in with just over a minute to go as Duke went up by six then 4 quick points for the Hokies made it a two-point game.
Virginia Tech just got the ball back and Ty Outlaw missed a three but, they were able to gain possession as the ball went out last off of RJ Barrett. Then it happened remember the two shots against UCF well it happened again. Ahmed Hill got away from Zion went up for the lob and he just pushed it right wide open right on top of the hoop and missed. I was stunned and thought how lucky can one team get.
