Big 12 Basketball: Jarrett Culver leads All-NCAA Tournament Team
By Chris Kern
Matt Mooney
Matt Mooney has had a very good season since transferring over from South Dakota. The Red Raiders lost so many key players from last season including star guards Keenan Evans and Zhaire Smith, but they have still found a way to advance further than they did a year ago.
Mooney has had some up and down moments during the NCAA Tournament there’s no doubt about that, but when he is struggling on the offensive end he has still made an impact on the defensive end as he fits in perfectly with this teams identity. He has played tough and made an impact in all four of their wins.
Against Northern Kentucky, he had a very good game finishing with nine points, eight assists, five steals, and three rebounds. That is a complete all-around game that helped this team pull away. They struggled to put them away in the first half, but his play was key in helping them secure the victory.
Against Buffalo, he really struggled to shoot the ball as he went just 4-15 from the field to score 11 points. He was good on the defensive end though as they held all of the talented Buffalo guards in check. He followed that up with just a solid performance on both ends of the floor in the win against Michigan as he finished with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
In the win over Gonzaga is where he really put it all together. Buffalo was dangerous, but Gonzaga is by far the most complete team they have faced all season. In that game, he finished with 17 points, five assists, three steals, and two rebounds. He has done a little bit of everything for this team all season and he has even stepped up his play during the NCAA Tournament.
