2. Matt McMahon, Murray State

Head coach Matt McMahon is a name that could become a hot commodity in the near future. He’s turned Murray State into quite the mid-major powerhouse and was behind the development of future top pick Ja Morant.

McMahon would be a home run hire if he was given the opportunity to coach in Blacksburg. He’s proven himself in a mid-major conference these past few seasons, compiling 54 victories across the past two seasons to go along with two NCAA Tournament appearances.

In terms of recruitment and development, McMahon and his staff have passed that test with flying colors in the OVC and it’s shown in the results. They’ve won the regular season and conference tournament championship the past two seasons and Ja Morant is slated to be a lottery pick in this year’s NBA Draft. The ACC would be a huge step up in terms of coaching and recruiting, but McMahon could be up for the challenge.

He showed he’s able to play with the big boys a bit with his team’s 83-64 victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles in a first-round upset. The Virginia Tech Hokies could be his next conquest if things fall his way.
