NCAA Basketball: Top freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors of 2018-19
By Josh Stevens
All-Sophomore Team
Ja Morant – Murray State
The number 2 pick in the draft is calling his name and why wouldn´t it be. He had the first triple-double in NCAA tournament since Draymond Green. He scored 24.5 points, 5.7 boards, and 10 assists a game. He led his team to an upset against Marquette and won the OVC against a team that got an at-large in a small conference.
Jarrett Culver – Texas Tech
Jarrett Culver and Zhaire Smith came in last year and dominated the game. Both were athletic freaks and Tech lost in the finals this season without Smith. You may ask how, well Jarrett Culver in how. Culver finished with 18.5 points and 6.4 boards a game on a team that focuses more on defense. he might not get a ton of steals and blocks, but for a perimeter defender, few are better than Culver.
De’Andre Hunter – Virginia
Hunter is just like Culver long and very good on defense. Hunter was actually matched-up against Culver a lot in the national title game. Hunter this season has 15.2 points and 5.1 rebounds a game. That may seem pedestrian, but he shot 43.8% from 3 and was outside of Diakite the best defender on a national title-winning team.
PJ Washington – Kentucky
Washington has some very good numbers this season taking a leap after his freshman year. He more than likely played himself into a spot in the draft. 15.2 points and 7.5 rebounds a game at Kentucky this season. But, his value was seen during the tournament. Kentucky struggles with Wofford without him in a game that they should have won by more than 6 based on the match-up, and would not have beaten Houston without him.
Daniel Gafford – Arkansas
Gafford was at the top of his game this year, his points jumped by 5 points from last season and rebound by 2.5. Arkansas was a very average team in the SEC which was the third best conference in basketball this season in my opinion. He average 16.9 points and 8.7 rebounds a game, he also shot a remarkable 66% from the field in a league that featured Austin Wiley, PJ Washington, and Grant Williams.
