Younger NBA followers have no clue how good an offensive player Reggie Evans was in college at Iowa, averaging 15.3 points per game and leading the country in free throw attempts. What’s not surprising are his gawdy rebounding numbers, going for 11.5 rebounds per game and ranking in the top-six both seasons.

It still wasn’t good enough for him to get drafted. But that turned out to be the then-Seattle SuperSonics’ gain, taking Evans and immediately starting him in the lineup for 60 games. It was clear early on that the 6-foot-8 forward wasn’t much of an offensive threat, but could rebound with the best of them, grabbing 6.6 boards per game his rookie season.

Evans never averaged more than 26.6 minutes per game in a given season, but he still managed to put up absurd rebounding numbers. He grabbed over 10 rebounds per gamet twice in a season and had numerous games of 20+ rebounds. With the then-New Jersey Nets, Evans had a career-high 26 in a single game and had a long streak of games with double-digit boards.

The crazy thing about Evans is that he never scored more than 6.0 points per game in any season. His elite rebounding skills and veteran presence were must-haves for NBA teams, with several of them making the playoffs. He’s never been an expensive option to have and while it’s four-on-five offensively with him on the court, but the rebounding edge is always on the side with Evans.

Career stats (809 games): 7.1 rebounds, 4.1 points, 0.6 assists per game
