NCAA Basketball: Top 25 most impactful freshmen for 2019-20 season
By Brian Rauf
18) Romeo Weems, PF, DePaul
It’s been a while since DePaul had a player of Weems’ caliber. It’s coming at a good time, too, as the Blue Demons have to replace their three leading scorers from last year’s 19-win team, including star Max Strus.
Weems is going to step in and immediately become this team’s go-to guy. He’s a 6-7 tweener who can do a bit of everything but is still a bit raw skill-wise – his best asset is his athleticism and attacking the basket off the dribble.
The top-rated player in the state of Michigan, Weems will be a matchup problem for opposing teams because of that athleticism and the tough, high-energy style he plays. He’s strong enough to bully smaller players and quick enough to go around bigger defenders. If he can develop a reliable three-point jumper – something that’s inconsistent for him right now – Weems could become one of the toughest covers in the Big East.
Weems is a big reason for optimism around the DePaul program, and they’ve also brought in some quality transfers in guard Charlie Moore (Kansas), who may get a waiver for immediate eligibility and forward Carte’Are Gordon (Saint Louis), who will be eligible in January. Former Jayhawks commit Markese Jacobs is also in this recruiting class.
With all of that talent, DePaul should be able to build on what was their most successful season in 12 years despite the roster turnover – but everyone will be following Weems’ lead.
