Illinois is interested in grad transfer

The Illinois Fighting Illini are still looking to fill out their roster and would prefer to add a grad transfer. One such player that fits that description and is drawing interest from the Illini, per ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, is Tyler Scanlon. Scanlon averaged 13.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists at Boston University this past season.

The 6’7, 215-pound wing is very experienced and can do a little bit of everything, He is a very good shooter who has knocked down 37.9% of his 3-pointers for his career. Scanlon scored in double-figures in 51 contests and produced five double-doubles during his tenure with the Terriers.

Belmont, George Washington, Minnesota, Richmond and Arkansas have also reportedly shown interest in the Fairfax (Va.) native.

Illinois has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2013 and is coming off a season where the Illini won two fewer games than they did in coach Brad Underwood’s first season two years ago. The good news is that the Illini have some talent returning and got a nice pickup in 2019 four-star big man Kofi Cockburn.

But what the Illini really need is a floor spacer. Illinois ranked in the bottom half of the Big Ten in 3-pointers made, 3-pointers attempted, and 3-point percentage in 2018-19. And Illinois lost one of their best perimeter shooters this past season in Aaron Jordan (59 triples, 41.5%) to graduation. Illinois has one scholarship remaining to use, so we will see if coach Brad Underwood can secure a commitment from Scanlon.
