Davonte Gaines – Chatham, VA

SF | 6-foot-7 | 175 lbs | No. 210 overall

Although the lowest-rated player in this class for Tennessee, Davonte Gaines is an extremely intriguing prospect. This is due to the fact that he boasts a slender 6-foot-7 frame and plenty of athleticism. Before taking on a major role at the college level, Gaines will likely need to add some weight and that should occur under the Volunteers’ coaching staff. His frame is somewhat untapped at this point in time and there is a potential monster ready to be unleashed, especially on the defensive end of the floor.

With the right development, Gaines could be a multipositional defender on the wing with the ability to cover 2-through-4. In the modern age of basketball, this switching versatility would make him a very valuable player. Additionally, there is plenty of room for him to grow offensively. He is already a solid finisher around the basket and that should only improve with more strength. Additionally, time with the coaching staff will help the development of his jump shot, which is definitely a work in progress at the moment.

Looking ahead to his role during this coming season, Gaines looks like a possible redshirt candidate. The Volunteers seem relatively deep on the wing and Gaines definitely needs to add some strength before taking on a substantial role. Taking a year to redshirt would allow him to spend the season in the weight room and work with the coaching staff on developing his body and all-around game. This could be the best situation for both the player and the team.
