60. #3 Purdue 87, #6 Villanova 61 (Round of 32)
The reigning champions watched their season come to an end as they were completely dominated by the Boilermakers. The Wildcats already trailed by 10 late in the first half when a 27-2 Purdue run ended any chance of a comeback. Carsen Edwards (42 points) hit nine 3-pointers and helped the Boilermakers dominate the Wildcats defense. Eric Paschall (19 points) and the rest of Villanova’s decimated team simply didn’t have an answer during that fateful run in the middle of the game. They couldn’t handle Purdue’s hot shooting and didn’t have an answer for center Matt Haarms (18 points, 9 rebounds) either.
59. #1 North Carolina 81, #9 Washington 59 (Round of 32)
The Tar Heels led this game in its entirety and made easy work of the Huskies in the second round. North Carolina was gutted by Texas A&M in last year’s second round, but this year the story was much different. Luke Maye and Nassir Little both put up 20 points and the Tar Heels made 50% of their shots. They controlled the game and greatly limited Matisse Thybulle (2 points). The Tar Heels doubled up the Huskies in rebounding and dominated in the paint. This wasn’t much of a contest; the Tar Heels simply got the best of the Huskies, who were clearly overmatched.
58. #1 Duke 85, #16 North Dakota State 62 (Round of 64)
For a brief moment, it looked like the impossible could happen, but then Duke cranked up the gears and made this game a laugher. The Bison led 25-24 with just under three minutes left in the half, but it was all Duke after that. The Blue Devils built their lead as large as 31 points, shooting over 50% and taking advantage of the Bison’s sloppy play. RJ Barrett (25 points, 14 rebounds) and Zion Williamson (25 points) helped lead the way for the Blue Devils, dispatching of the Bison with relative ease. Despite that slow start, the highly touted Blue Devils still shined on the national stage, though their future wins would be far less convincing.
