Oklahoma State Basketball: Ranking 2019-20 non-conference opponents
10. Southeastern Louisiana (Dec 29th)
2018-19 record: 17-16 (12-6)
The Lions had a good season in the Southland, primarily on the backs of seniors Marlain Veal and Moses Greenwood. But with both of them gone, Southeastern Louisiana will have to literally find a way to score. They already were ranked close to 300th nationally in scoring (67.4 ppg) and don’t return a single player who produced more than six points a night. This is the last opponent Oklahoma State will face before Big 12 play. That’s usually the place for “tuneup” games for power conference teams on their schedules. SELU fills that role this time around.
9. UMKC Kangaroos (Nov 9th)
2018-19 record: 11-21 (6-10)
There was a time this offseason where we didn’t even know if UMKC would even field a roster, with 11 players entering the transfer portal. Most of them returned for new head coach Billy Donlon, except leading scorer Xavier Bishop and big man Danny Dixon. Double-digit scorers Bob Whitfield and Brandon McKissic will be tasked with the scoring duties while Clemson grad transfer center Javan White hopes he can dominate the WAC.
8. Oral Roberts (Nov 6th)
2018-19 record: 11-21 (7-9)
The first opponent for Oklahoma State this season, Oral Roberts could pose a hidden threat in the same way Charlotte did last year. The Golden Eagles return bring back their top four scorers, including an imposing frontcourt combo of Kevin Obanor and Emmanuel Nzekwesi, who combined to average 29.2 ppg and 15.7 rpg to pace the team. Youth and a lack of perimeter production hurt Oral Roberts but they’ll get back guard RJ Fuqua, who missed all of last season with a hip injury.
7. Yale Bulldogs (Nov 17th)
2018-19 record: 22-8 (10-4)
The reigning Ivy League champs suffered a big blow with Conference Player of the Year Miye Oni left early for the NBA Draft. And with Alex Copeland and Blake Reynolds graduating, the Bulldogs will be replacing their top three scorers from a year ago. But head coach James Jones still has forwards Jordan Bruner and Paul Atkinson to buoy the frontcourt next year. The key will be who emerges from the backcourt to provide balance, with just rising junior guard Azar Swain the only proven commodity.
