Appalachian State Mountaineers

It is fair to say the Myles Tate would be the highest-ranked player to ever commit to Appalachian State if that is his final destination. In the 247Sports database, the Mountaineers have only ever secured one player ranked in the nation’s top-250 for a class and Tate looks to be a potential top-100 player. As a result, it seems difficult to project that this will be the eventual landing spot but he would be a program-changing recruit. Tate would be able to come in as possibly the team’s best player right away and could help carry the program to some successful seasons.

With that said, though, Appalachian State plays in the Sun Belt and there are programs from far more competitive leagues involved in this recruitment as well. Additionally, it is very difficult for programs in one-bid leagues to gain consistency with regards to reaching the NCAA Tournament and that is a major goal for many high school prospects. Barring a massive change in the college basketball landscape or a ridiculously successful season, Appalachian State’s only path to the Big Dance is by winning their conference tournament.

With regards to this particular recruitment, Tate landed an offer from Appalachian State in late May and there is clearly still some strong contact. The Mountaineers might not seem to be the favorite but making the final seven is certainly a great step for the program. Appalachian State is in relatively close proximity to Tate as well, so that could be a part of head coach Dustin Kerns’ pitch.
