North Carolina needs Caleb Love

PG | 6-foot-3 | 170 lbs | No. 21 overall

It is no secret that North Carolina needs to add a point guard in this recruiting class. Head coach Roy Williams has already shored up his two-big future with commits from Day’Ron Sharpe (No. 17) and Walker Kessler (No. 15), but he needs a creator to lead the offense. Cole Anthony is set to leave for the NBA after this coming season and there is not a clear heir apparent to his role. While there are a couple of pieces on the roster that can play point guard for some stretches, it is reasonable to assume that the Tar Heels will seek a top-tier lead guard in this recruiting class.

While landing Caleb Love might prove difficult, he is the type of player that could greatly raise North Carolina’s ceiling for the 2020-21 season. He is a hard-nosed point guard with the ability to make a significant impact on both ends of the floor. Love brings plenty of size to the position at 6-foot-3 and can be a scorer, distributor, and lockdown defender. While there is still some room for development, Love is the total package at the point guard slot.

Love posted a strong summer on the Nike EYBL circuit while averaging 15.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.9 steals per game across 20 contests with Brad Beal Elite (MO). His defensive skills were also on full display.

With regards to his recruitment, there are many top-tier programs that remain involved. He is currently down to a final six that includes North Carolina, Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Louisville. Of these programs, it feels as though the Tar Heels and the Tigers (home state) are emerging as the favorites. There are no crystal ball predictions for his commitment at this time but he would be a big-time addition for Coach Williams.
