NBA Draft 2020: 5 players in mix for top pick in newest mock draft
By Brian Rauf
Picks No. 6-10
6) Miami Heat – RJ Hampton, PG, New Zealand Breakers
Miami needs a long-term answer of their own at point guard, and being in a position to land Hampton could be the answer to their prayers. He has a great all-around skill set that Miami covets (passing, quickness, scoring, defense) to go along with great size at 6-5. As he continues to get stronger, he may end up in the top five.
7) Boston Celtics (via Memphis Grizzlies) – Deni Avdija, PG/SG/SF, Maccabi Tel Aviv
The Celtics don’t have a glaring weakness on the roster, making Avdija the kind of smart, versatile, high-upside prospect that would fit perfectly. He’s a quality playmaker at 6-8, but can also play off the ball and excels at attacking the rim. The ability to do everything at his size should make him a matchup nightmare down the road.
8) Minnesota Timberwolves – Theo Maledon, PG, Villeurbanne
The second straight international prospect slated to go in the top 10, Maledon is a smart, savvy playmaker who rarely turns the ball over and has an array of crafty finishes around the rim. He needs to get stronger and the rest of his raw – he’s an inconsistent shooter and defender – but his playmaking and size (6-4) give him a high floor. Minnesota is another one of those teams that need a long-term answer at point guard, so taking a flyer on Maledon makes sense here.
9) Chicago Bulls – Scottie Lewis, SG/SF, Florida
Scottie Lewis is a freak athlete – the kind of athlete who will immediately be one of the most athletic players in the NBA as soon as he gets drafted. That athleticism, when put with his size (6-5, 185 lbs) and motor, allows him to make a significant impact in transition and on the defensive end. His shooting is still a work in progress, but Chicago already has a number of shoot-first perimeter players. Adding Lewis gives them another high-upside young player with a different skill set.
10) Orlando Magic – Josh Green, SG, Arizona
Orlando’s frontcourt is set with Aaron Gordon, Jonathan Isaac, Nikola Vucevic, and Mo Bamba. Their backcourt is another matter entirely. Even if the Markelle Fultz experiment works out, they need more perimeter scoring, especially from the two-guard spot. Enter Green, another high-level athlete at 6-6 and 190 pounds who excels at finishing around the rim. If he continues to improve as a jump shooter, he could go much higher than this.
