What to Expect?

The incoming freshman is next in a long line of Kansas guards who look to lead their team to a final four and play in the NBA. The number 19 recruit in the country is the highest-ranked recruit out of the Sooner state since Trae Young. It isn’t a fair comparison to compare Thompson to the NBA player Young but since they are from the same state, it is going to happen.

Thompson is a quick guard with good handles. The one thing that separates him from the pack is his ability to shoot. He is a great shooter, which is more great news for Kansas. The Jayhawks do not currently have a great shooter on the roster, and after LaGerald Vick left last season they really struggled to score from deep. Thompson is just what the doctor ordered in that regard.

This summer on the Under Armour tour Thompson ran with the Oklahoma Run PWP program and averaged 25 a game while shooting 47% from deep. The shooting is a great attribute to a player who can play many positions and distribute and score in many ways. If Thompson is half the player on offense that Young was it would be a plus.

To reach his full potential, he is going to have to pass the ball and play defense. It doesn’t matter to Self, and it has never mattered to him how many stars a player has once he arrives in Lawrence. If Thompson doesn’t play hard and earn it, he won’t see the floor. Given his work ethic that won’t be a problem. Is this a sign that Kansas has returned to dominate the recruiting trail like old times?
