Latest Commitment

Help will be coming in the 2020 class as Kansas was able to secure the commitment of 5-star guard Bryce Thompson. Coach Self got involved with the guard later than every other school on his final list. The final list consisted of Oklahoma State, Kansas, Oklahoma, North Carolina and Michigan State. The Jayhawks were able to secure the commitment of the Tulsa, Oklahoma native and were convincing enough to pry him away from his home state.

The guard committing is one of the most important commitments for coach Self in recent memory. The combo guard is going to expected to step right in and play meaningful minutes. It would not be a surprise to see either Agbaji or Dotson leave for the NBA with a good season, maybe both. Other than Garrett the Jayhawks won’t have much for guards. Thompson’s commitment gives Self a star player to once again build around.

The commitment also signifies that Kansas may not be hurt as much by the FBI investigation as was led on. They now have gotten three 2020 recruits in the last 30 days and Thompson is the prize of the bunch. Kansas has some impressive momentum on the recruiting trail right now. While this is all good news for the Jayhawks, something the recruitment of Thompson was easier for Kansas than the other schools.

Parents have one of the biggest influences on a kid and where he chooses to play. This time was no different, the guards Dad, Rob was a player under Self at Tulsa in the 90’s. The two remain in contact today and have a strong relationship with one another. Thompson has said that and his own respect for how he was treated by Athletic Director Jeff Long on their visit was what sealed the deal.

The guard was also looking forward to playing for Self. Coach Self is known as a coach who always gets the best out of his players and demands a certain level of play and intensity every night his team touches the floor. That is the main reason Kansas has been able to remain at the top for so long.
