player. 476. . . . Providence Friars. 10

Providence is not only the most disappointing team in the Big East, but the most disappointing team in the entire country. With so much returning talent and a well-respected head coach on the sidelines, it is absolutely astonishing to see the Friars holding just a 6-6 record through the opening month and a half. I will say that I was not quite as high on PC as others were in the preseason, but I certainly did not expect the team to look as poor as they have so far.

Even though conference play is yet to begin, Providence’s NCAA Tournament hopes have already been essentially thrown out the window barring a run at Madison Square Garden in a few months. That might seem melodramatic but it is the truth. The Friars’ resume is in very bad shape right now and even an above-.500 record in the Big East might not be enough to warrant receiving an at-large bid. For reference, here is a quick early-season breakdown of Providence’s resume:

  • NET Ranking: 150th
  • Quadrant Records: Q1: 0-1 | Q2: 0-1 | Q3: 1-3 | Q4: 5-1
  • Predictive Metric Average: 101.7

It seems shocking to say it, but Providence just isn’t any good this season. Their defense is solid but not anything special and their offense struggles to score from everywhere on the court. Thankfully, the Friars rebound quite well and can finish second-chance opportunities but that is maybe the only bright spot offensively. On the defensive end of the floor, they create their fair share of turnovers but also send their opponents to the charity stripe at a high rate.

Alpha Diallo is posting strong box score numbers as the leader of the team but this has been an altogether rough start for Providence. That much was evident once again during this past week as the team was absolutely obliterated by 32 points against Florida.
