Starting Five

Duke has used seven different starting lineups this season, if they were to use the lineup above, it would be their eighth. Four of the five starters this season for Duke have been consistent with Jones, Stanley, Hurt and Carey all appearing in more lineups than not.

Carey is the Blue Devil who has started in every game this season as both Stanley and Jones have missed a game each due to injury. Matthew Hurt, on the other hand, has started in all but two games.

That being said, you should expect all four of them to be starters moving forward with the fifth player being Joey Baker who has yet to crack the starting five.

Baker was incredible on Thursday night with a career-high 22 points on 6-11 shooting including five made threes in seven attempts from beyond the arc. This, however, is nothing new, Baker has been fantastic all year off the bench.

In the five games where Baker has taken at least six shots, he has an average field goal percentage of 61.4% with 12.6 points per game. That being said, I think it is time to see Baker get an opportunity to start.

After the game Thursday, Coach K praised Baker as Duke’s “quickest and most accurate shooter” also saying that Baker is the hardest working player on the team. Having a frontcourt of Hurt and Baker, two forwards who can score from just about anywhere on the court is dangerous to say the last and is one I could see working very well.

All that being said, don’t be surprised if this is the starting lineup that takes the court when Duke takes on Brown on December 28th.

Here is how many minutes I see each of these five players getting:

  • Tre Jones: 32 minutes
  • Cassius Stanley: 25 minutes
  • Joey Baker: 21 minutes
  • Matthew Hurt: 22 minutes
  • Vernon Carey jr.: 24 minutes

But who would get minutes off the bench?
