NCAA Basketball: Top 10 teams currently underachieving in 2019-20 season
8. New Mexico State Aggies
Record: 9-6
With six losses after only fourteen games played, New Mexico State would be right to be in panic mode. The reality is that this Aggies team is not much different from the one that finished all of the 2018-19 season with thirty wins and only five losses and gave Auburn a scare in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Almost everyone on the current team was their last year and they have a great Head Coach in Chris Jans. Perhaps its heartbreak over the loss to Auburn in the final seconds that has led them to hold onto an NCAA Tournament hangover for this long.
Nonetheless, this deep New Mexico State team should not have lost the games that they have. After beating New Mexico twice a season ago, they have lost both matchups for the New Mexico State Championship this season. New Mexico is a lot better than they used to be, but the Aggies were still said to be the better team.
In addition to the two losses to the Lobos, they have lost to UTEP, Arizona, George Mason, and Washington State. As understandable as a loss to Arizona is, they should not have lost by 30.
The problem that is resulting in such poor play for the Aggies so far is the inability to score consistently. Last year, this team went 12 deep at times, and everyone on the floor was capable of scoring. While they are still very deep, they do not seem to score with ease anymore. They average only 66 points per game, ranking 330th nationally. Much of this may be due to the fact that everyone that plays them has fully figured them out.
For New Mexico State to take steps back toward performing at the level in which they should. They need to get back to using their depth to overwhelm their opponents offensively. If they can, then they will be set for conference play, but if not, then they are in for a long season.
