NCAA Basketball: Top 10 head coaches from past decade (2010-19)
By Joey Loose
8. Bill Self
Though he couldn’t add a second national title in the decade, the success that Self has had at Kansas has certainly earned him a place on this list. A fantastic recruiter who built success with Tulsa and Illinois in years prior, what makes Self stand out is the sustained success his Kansas teams have had.
While the streak did end last season, he led Kansas to 15 straight Big 12 regular-season titles, the last nine of which came in this decade for the Jayhawks. Their conference record and level of talent has been extraordinary, especially in a league as balanced and strong as the Big 12. Self wasn’t dominating the A10 or Mountain West, but a real power conference.
He helped lead the Jayhawks to the national title game in 2012 and another Final Four in 2018, with three more Elite Eights sprinkled in there as well. Leading Kansas into at least the national quarterfinal in half of the seasons cements his place on this list. While the Jayhawks have faltered many times in the Tournament, it’s impossible to deny the successful program that Self has built.
The next decade could bring that second title for Self or perhaps the beginning of a new conference title streak. Either way, Self spent the decade cementing Kansas as one of the true Blue Bloods of college basketball. While a title would’ve been great, he’s certainly set up the Jayhawks for years to come and it’s hard to find another coach was as impressive a win-loss record as Self.
