NCAA Basketball: Top 25 impact transfers so far in 2019-20 season
24. Derryck Thornton – Boston College
2019-20 stats: 13.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg 3.8 apg
It’s been a long journey for the senior, struggling to find his place at previous stops Duke and USC. As a grad transfer, he elected to go to Boston College, a team that needed a veteran guard to step in for the departed Ky Bowman. Thornton has done as good as you can ask, leading the Eagles in scoring (13.3 ppg) and assists (3.3 apg).
Boston College is likely not a postseason team but they’ve already proven to be a thorn in ACC teams sides. Led by Thornton, they’ve already beaten Wake Forest and Notre Dame. In a bubble filled with teams who can’t afford a bad loss going forward, the grad transfer point guard can single-handedly take a team out.
23. Rasir Bolton – Iowa State
2019-20 stats: 14.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.7 apg
Tyrese Haliburton gets all the attention for this Cyclones team but the other sophomore in Bolton has also been impressive. The only other double-digit scorer, the Penn State transfer averaged 20 ppg in a key four-game stretch that included wins over Seton Hall and Alabama. He also scored a career-high 29 points against Florida A&M, although it still wasn’t enough to prevent the humiliating loss.
22. Isaiah White – Portland
2019-20 stats: 13.3 ppg 2.9 rpg 2.4 apg
After losing last year’s leading scorer Marcus Shaver last offseason via transfer, the Pilots and head coach Terry Porter looked dead in the water. But a late pickup in Maine grad transfer White has given the coach a lifeline for now. He leads the team in scoring and has been huge in Portland’s non-conference success. If he can have a couple of big outings in WCC play (Pilots went winless in WCC last season), it might be enough to save Porter’s job.
