Honorable mentions

Marvin Johnson – Eastern Illinois

JUCO school: Coffeyville CC

2019-20 stats: 10.3 ppg 4.2 rpg 3.6 apg

Paired with two other solid JUCO newcomers (Deang Deang and George Dixon), Johnson has been very effective for the Panthers. Leading the team in assists, the 6’6 guard had a five-game stretch where he scored at least 12 points. Johnson’s role is still evolving between starting and coming off the bench but look for him to remain impactful for Eastern Illinois either way.

Alphonso Anderson – Utah State

JUCO school: North Idaho College

2019-20 stats: 10.8 ppg 4.5 rpg 1.2 apg

Although he’s behind three other players in terms of importance (Sam Merrill, Neemias Queta and Justin Bean), the Aggies have needed Anderson to come through during the non-conference. His season-high 24 points gave Utah State their biggest win of the season against LSU, while also reaching in double figures in nine other games. When Merril has been off offensively, Anderson has stepped up for the team from the perimeter.

Cameron Johnson – Stephen F Austin

JUCO school: Tyler Community College

2019-20 stats: 13.5 ppg 4.3 rpg 1.0 apg

While Kevon Harris has been getting the bulk of the credit for the Lumberjacks great success so far, the depth of the team also plays a role. It’s allowed 6’6 guard Johnson to come off the bench and still put up massive numbers in a short period of time. He’s scoring 25 ppg per 40 minutes and has dropped at least 15 points in a game nine different times. Imagine what Johnson would do if he played 30 minutes a night.

Yeikson Montero – Eastern Michigan

JUCO school: Pensacola State

2019-20 stats: 9.3 ppg 2.4 rpg 1.5 apg

The Eagles are already just five wins away from matchup last year’s total and Montero has played a big part in the improvement. The starting guard’s numbers don’t pop off the sheet but he’s been consistent overall, scoring double figures in eight games that includes a season-high 16 points in a win over Detroit.

Khadim Sy – Ole Miss

JUCO school: Daytona State

2019-20 stats: 9.3 ppg 5.0 rpg 1.0 apg

It’s taking Sy a while to get acclimated back to the D-I level, not reaching double figures the first seven games of the season. Since then, the center has done it every game, including a career-high 20 points against Southeastern Louisiana. Ole Miss will go as far as their guards take them but Sy’s presence down low will be huge in the SEC the rest of the way.
