Mid-major Basketball power rankings: Gonzaga, SDSU and Dayton dominates
24. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
2019-20 record: 13-6 (6-1 in CUSA)
The Hilltoppers have adjusted to life without Charles Bassey first-place start in Conference USA. Sophomore guard Taveion Hollingsworth is making a strong place for Conference Player of the Year, averaging 18 ppg in the seven league games so far. Northern Kentucky transfer Carson Williams has been effective with the frontcourt, while the depth that head coach Rick Stansbury has tried to build up has finally been paying off. There’s no replacing Bassey but with no truly dominant teams in the league this year, Western Kentucky has as good a shot as anyone to win the regular-season and tournament title.
23. New Mexico State Aggies
2019-20 record: 14-6 (5-0 in WAC)
Getting back into WAC play means that the wins are going to pile up for the Aggies, coming off a solid win over Seattle. However, New Mexico State suffered yet another injury with leading scorer Trevelin Queen out for the next month with a lateral meniscus tear. This team does have the depth to remain favorites for the WAC regular-season title but the likelihood the Aggies suffer a loss or two now has gone exponentially up.
22. Wright State Raiders
2019-20 record: 17-4 (7-1 in Horizon League)
The Raiders “almost” went through the recent four-game road trip without a blemish. But they couldn’t get past Illinois-Chicago, falling by four points last week. Led by Horizon League Player of the Year favorite Loudon Love, Wright State has won the past two games at home. Up next is a massive conference clash with second-place Northern Kentucky, with the Raiders either going to be tied in the standings or have a strong two-game lead.
