With the number two offense in the nation, Dayton’s resurgence has been a fun development for the sport. But although it would have been hard to expect the Flyers to be quite this good, the ShotQ metric hinted at this possibility last season.

Despite only finishing 43rd in offense overall, Dayton ranked 3rd in ShotQ and 8th in eFG% in 2018-19, laying a solid offensive foundation. With improved offensive rebounding and turnover percentages, this foundation is being realized with impressive results.

Stanford might fit the “Dayton profile” next season. The Cardinal are currently  6th in shot quality and 8th in eFG%, but only have the 112th-best offense in the country due to struggles with turnovers and offensive rebounding. If Stanford returns everyone next season (no seniors in rotation) and improves in these areas, there’s a real chance it could surprise some people. The team’s defense (ranked 8th) is already performing well.

Some teams are attempting high-quality shots but they’re just not falling. What’s been going on?
