Iowa’s big men got in early foul trouble

Luka Garza had to sit with two fouls after only playing four minutes and 46 seconds and then Ryan Kriener got assessed a technical foul for taunting after making a shot he was fouled on.

This left a big hole in the frontcourt and offensive efficiency for the Hawkeyes. With them on the bench, the Hawkeyes failed to score on six possessions. That allowed the newly minted Big Ten Player of the Week Jalen Smith to get himself going.

The Terps went on a 6-0 run to take the lead briefly 24-23.

Garza came back in the game and was productive. He had six early points and made his presence felt when the Terps looked to drive.

Where those players being in foul trouble worked to the Terps benefit was their offensive production. Smith was able to take advantage of the lack of size inside and he converted on his opportunities.

They grabbed the halftime lead with a 36-32 advantage. Cowan Jr. led all scorers with 12 points and four assists followed by Smith’s eight points and five rebounds.

Foul trouble plagued Iowa throughout the game. Connor McCaffery and Joe Toussaint fouled out with five and Garza finished with four fouls.
