8. Samford

Record: 9-21 (3-13 SoCon)

While the SoCon is very competitive with quite a few teams at the top, the teams at the bottom of the standings are very much at the bottom. At 3-13 in conference play, Samford’s only victories have come against the two teams ranked below them. They have only won one of their last fourteen contests, and the games have not been very close.

Where Samford is certainly not a strong enough team to contend in the league, they do have the most versatile player in SoCon Basketball in Josh Sharkey. Sharkey is the do-everything guy for Samford and he’s the kind of player that can control games and perhaps lead them to some surprising upsets in the SoCon Basketball Tournament.

7. Wofford

Record: 16-13 (8-8 SoCon)

After starting conference play relatively strong and showing signs that they may be competitive in the league once again, Wofford has dropped their last five games.

It was no secret that they were not going to be the same threat they were a year ago, given that they lost much of their offensive firepower and frontcourt size. The Terriers have been in close games, but they are just not as deep as the teams toward the top of the league.

To close off the regular season, Wofford has a game against a very talented ETSU squad and a Mercer team that beat them once this year. I am afraid that they could end up with two more losses, but I do believe this is a team capable of pulling an upset in the SoCon Basketball Tournament.
