ACC-Big 12

UNC, ACC: Not much to say here except that the Tar Heels were one of the most disappointing clubs in all of basketball this season, finishing 14-19 and 6-14 in the ACC. It marked UNC’s first losing campaign since 2001-02 when Matt Doherty was in charge, and the six victories were the fewest in a decade.

UNC was not good on either end of the floor, ranking 186th in offensive efficiency and 246th in defensive efficiency. Granted, the Tar Heels, who started the season ranked ninth in AP poll and went as high as fifth, were without Cole Anthony for 11 games while fellow freshmen Anthony Harris and Jeremiah Francis were out for more than half of the campaign. Additionally, third-leading scorer Brandon Robinson missed eight contests. UNC went 4-7 without Anthony.

NJIT, A-Sun: Despite only returning a tad bit over 50% of the team’s scoring from its 2018-19 team that won 21 games, the Highlanders were expected to finish in the top half of the A-Sun. However, NJIT opened the season with just three wins in their first 12 games despite being favored in seven of those games. The Highlanders were awful on the offensive end with the lone exception being leading scorer Zach Cooks and he was only a little better than average. NJIT failed to score 50 in six games and didn’t even reach the 40-point mark twice. Their 63.5 scoring average ranked 331st in the nation.

Iowa State, Big 12: Iowa State was expected to finish in the top half of the Big 12 standings despite losing five of their top seven performers from a year ago. However, star guard Tyler Haliburton missed the final nine games of the year, and the Cyclones went 2-7 in that span and finished the year with a 12-20 record overall. Also, Michael Jacobs, along with Solomon Young and Prentiss Nixon, didn’t perform up to expectations.
