10. San Diego State Aztecs

Speaking of disappointment and anguish, there aren’t a lot of teams that experienced these feelings more than the Aztecs. Coming off the best regular season in school history, a season in which the team won its first 26 games, SDSU was looking like a huge favorite to make their first Final Four ever. But, since that’s been taken away, the Aztec faithful can at least take pride in knowing their squad was one of the most watchable teams in the nation.

Ranking 5th in the nation in Offensive Rating and 20th in Effective FG%, long-time Steve Fisher disciple Brian Dutcher has done more than just carry on Fisher’s success with the program, he’s turned them into a deadly efficient mid-major powerhouse. They were also a force on defense, ranking inside the top 50 in Turnovers Forced Per Game. Deploying a 3-guard lineup, Dutcher was able to deploy his trap-heavy defense to perfection, using that to get easy buckets in transition, explaining their high-efficiency marks on offense.

This aggressive defense to generate easy buckets on offense strategy has not only made SDSU one of the best teams in the nation, but it’s made them one of the most enjoyable to watch. Let’s hope Dutcher can recreate at least some of this success with his squad next season.
