Maryland Terrapins

The Terps are coming off of their best season in the Big Ten to date. They finished 12th in the final AP Poll and as Big Ten champions with a 24-7 (14-6 Big Ten) record. Head Coach Mark Turgeon is looking to usher in a new era with Anthony Cowan Jr. and Jalen Smith likely gone. Smith’s NBA Draft status is still up in the air after having his best season as a Terp where he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds, First Team All-Big Ten, All-Big Ten Defensive Team selections and a host of Third Team All-American selections. April 26th is the deadline for players to enter the NBA Draft and June 15th is the deadline to return to school.

I highly doubt that Smith stays. If the Terps can land Bruner and a prized guard transfer like Bryce Aiken, Carlik Jones or Amauri Hardy from UNLV,  the new era transition will be a lot smoother. Former Duke guard Alex O’Connell is even in play and is considering the Terps heavily. Turgeon had success with the pairing of transfers Dez Wells and Rasheed Sulaimon in the past. After Ricky Lindo Jr. announced his transfer, the Terps landed Boston College transfer forward Jairus Hamilton who will be looking to play this season if an eligibility waiver is approved.

Jordan Bruner brings to the table some of the same characteristics that Smith did. Maryland’s offense runs out of the pick and roll which falls in line with Bruner’s ability to roll and get a basket in close or pop to the perimeter and drain a three. He would be able to come in with experience and take on a leadership role early. Bruner couldn’t go wrong with the Terps considering the success they had this season and what could’ve been in the NCAA Tournament.
