Texas Tech Red Raiders

As great as the all-around forward Chris Clarke was last season, Texas Tech will need its guards to be more of a facilitator. Whether it’s Jahmi’us Ramsey and Nimari Burnett next season, the Red Raiders will have to prepare for them to leave soon and have a traditional point guard to take over.
Burton fits what they do well on both ends of the court and isn’t ball-dominant at all on offense.

And head coach Chris Beard’s ability to develop has to be a convincing argument for any transfer, especially since the four previous ones were able to be NCAA Tournament-worthy for the first time in their college careers. Burton could be the next one, as the lead guard when eligible.

Xavier Musketeers

The Musketeers have been targeting any guard in the transfer portal who can shoot the ball well from deep, hoping to fix a clear weakness from this past season. They landed one already in Gardner-Webb grad transfer Nate Johnson, a shooting guard who shot 40% from deep this past season.

The bigger need for 2020-21 though is at the point guard position, with Paul Scruggs and Naji Marshall gone no matter what by then. One notable thing is that top-50 point guard Dwon Odom is joining for this upcoming season. If he gets playing time and excels as a freshman, where would that put Burton if he picked Xavier and had to sit out?

Burton can play off the ball and share the point guard duties, as he did with Grant Sherfield. But if he wants to be the lead ball-handler and take care of the offense, then Marquette and Seton Hall should be the favorites. They won’t have 20 ppg scorers to dominate the ball anymore, giving someone like Burton the keys if he wants it.
