NCAA Basketball: 15 head coaches on early hot seat for 2020-21 season
By Joey Loose
7. Andy Enfield (USC)
No coach in recent memory took advantage of a hot week of basketball more than Enfield. After leading 15-seed Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet Sixteen in 2013, he immediately jumped coasts and took over at USC. Now seven years into his tenure, he hasn’t exactly turned the Trojans into a basketball power, but not all hope is lost.
Top prospect Evan Mobley arrives next season, reunited him with brother Isaiah and building a considerably stronger roster than Enfield has had in recent years. He’s actually done a solid job bringing talent to the Trojans, though they’ve made just two trips to the NCAA Tournament under his leadership. USC doesn’t need to transform into a team that makes the second weekend of the Tournament every season, but Enfield needs a great year from the Mobley’s to secure his job standing.
In all likelihood, Enfield will be safe if things do not fall apart for USC next season. Then again, it’s tough to call a coach’s job safe, even when he’s bringing in a talented group of recruits like the Mobley’s. Just across town, Steve Alford brought the Ball family to the Bruins and watched himself lose his job while the team struggled. These two schools are held to different standards, but Enfield has work ahead of him either way.
