Big 12 Basketball: Breakout candidates from each team for 2020-21 season
By Brian Rauf
Oklahoma State – Ferron Flavors Jr.
There is a ton of buzz surrounding the Oklahoma State program going into next season, and there should be. Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, committed to the Cowboys, and they return a number of key players including Isaac Likekele and Yor Anei.
All three of those guys are expected to have big years and the rest of their top 10 recruiting class should contribute as well, but no one is in better position to do so than Ferron Flavors Jr., a grad transfer from Cal Baptist.
Flavors isn’t going to be counted on to carry the offense, and that’s not his role. However, he is a very capable offensive player and is a knockdown three-point shooter, which is vital for this group. Oklahoma State ranked 266nd in the country in three-point shooting last year and are losing their best perimeter shooters in Lindy Waters and Thomas Dziagwa. Flavors shot 43.9 percent from deep for Cal Baptist last year, making an average of three per game.
Cunningham and Likekele are excellent slashers and will have the attention of opposing defenses all game long. They’re also great facilitators (especially in Cunningham’s case) who will find the open man when they draw that extra attention. Enter Flavors, the perfect floor spacer.
I fully expect Flavors to be the recipient of a lot of wide-open looks generated by Cunningham and Likekele, and they’ll be looking for him as Oklahoma State’s best shooter. That should bode well for Flavors.
