BYU Cougars

While landing Purdue grad transfer Matt Haarms was a big move for Mark Pope and the Cougars, the point guard position has been of bigger need for them to address. They’ve in the running for a number of players, including Makale Foreman, Anthony Nelson, Franco Miller Jr. and others. The goal is to find at one guard who can sit out next season, replacing rising senior Alex Barcello.

BYU is currently in hard pursuit of Georgetown transfer Mac McClung. He’s looking to play primarily at the point position and could be eligible to play next season if he can get a waiver. But that’ll make it harder to land another sit-out guard without knowing what role they’ll play. But if McClung picks elsewhere, that frees the team to target one of the remaining guards in the portal.

Iowa State Cyclones

Just like BYU, Iowa State has been in the portal in an effort to find any combination of guards to replace the massive level of production that Tyrese Haliburton provided. They did land sit-out transfer Tyler Harris from Memphis, along with recently grabbing DePaul graduate Jalen Coleman-Lands.

The Cyclones can still add one more guard for the 2021-22 roster, particularly if Rasir Bolton bolts for the pros a year from now. The program has to be realistic about who they can target and while Washington doesn’t have the greatest history at the power conference level, he can be a serviceable asset for depth purposes for this program, even for just one year.
