Why you should know about Bryson Williams

Williams came out of high school known as a prolific scorer. When he left Roosevelt High School in California, he was the school’s all-time leading scorer. He scored over 2,000 points in high school and averaged 34 points and 18 rebounds his senior year. When he transferred to UTEP from Fresno State after his sophomore season he was ranked as one of the top transfers in the country and he lived up to that billing after his two years in Fresno. Williams decided to leave Fresno when his head coach Rodney Terry, decided to become the head coach at UTEP.

The forward is a pure scorer and his numbers showed just that last year. He was third in the conference with a scoring average of 17.8 points per game. He shot just under 50% from the floor and just over 35% from deep. He was automatic at the foul line and could score from anywhere on the floor. In looking at his numbers it is hard to say how he didn’t break out a season ago considering his scoring numbers and that he was named to the first-team All-Conference USA. However, many would argue that the forward has been nowhere close to reaching his ceiling as a basketball player.

It was already mentioned he received the Conference USA All-first team honors. He was also named the conference player of the week three times. The forward is a complete player and is one of the best rebounders and rim protectors in Conference USA as well. His 7.8 rebounds per game were good enough for third in the conference. He was the only player to finish in the top 5 in both points per game and rebounds per game. The senior led UTEP in minutes per game at just under 32 per game and when looking at how much he impacted the game it is easy to see why he was on the floor so much.

Some of the other feats for Williams were his trio of 30-point games, those 30 point games went along with five double-doubles. He was the team leader in points with 571 and rebounds with 229. UTEP won 17 games last year which was a 9-game win improvement. The senior forward is a big reason why the Miners experienced their best season since 2015. I know the Miner fans can not wait to see what year two has in store for their team especially for Williams.
