NCAA Basketball: Analyzing grad transfer forward Justyn Mutts 3 finalists
NCAA Basketball finalist for Justyn Mutts – Houston Cougars
Houston has had their frontcourt depth take two big hits this past month with Fabian White tearing his ACL and Nate Hinton staying in the NBA draft. With the immediate need for a forward to replace them, Kelvin Sampson has wasted no time in reaching out to Mutts.
Houston is likely to roll with a small ball lineup for a majority of next season but they desperately need the size and rebounding that Mutts would be able to bring to the team. White and Hinton combined to average 14.2 rebounds per game leaving a big hole for next season, Mutts with his 8.4 rebounds per game would definitely help on the glass moving forward.
Houston was likely a top 10-15 team in the preseason polls prior to losing two key frontcourt players and while Mutts wouldn’t be a direct replacement for White or Hinton, he’d still bring a lot of value. The Cougars have consistently been one of the best teams in the AAC and return a ton of talent in their backcourt. Caleb Mills and Quentin Grimes will form one of the best backcourt duos in not only the league but the country.
With Kelvin Sampson and the high ceiling that the Cougars have for next season, I think that Houston would be the best destination for Justyn Mutts. He would fit right in with Houston’s play style.
Mutts would likely get a chance at some significant playing time with any of these schools and that’s a big reason why they’re on his list. Expect him to make his final decision in the coming weeks.
