NCAA Basketball: Updated 2020-21 power rankings after NBA Draft deadline
While none of the current Longhorn players entertained the idea of the NBA Draft, this offseason was still eventful. First, the job of head coach Shaka Smart had to be confirmed to be safe after the sudden end of the season. He was viewed as right on the hot seat if the team didn’t make the NCAA Tournament, but with the Big 12 Tournament only playing its opening round, the program decided to give him another year with his best roster coming back since Smart arrived at Austin.
The other big storyline for the team this offseason was getting… and keeping a commitment from five-star power forward Greg Brown. He was one of the players who were linked to the G League Select Team and at one point was predicted to go there. Now, with the 2020-21 G League season in potential doubt, it looks as if he made a good decision.
Brown joins basically the entire roster coming back, including a trio of double-digit scoring guards (Andrew Jones, Matt Coleman, and Courtney Ramey), along with starting center and leading rebounder Jericho Sims. Another positive note from the offseason for Texas is that none of the reserves from the bench elect to transfer. With Brown coming on board, there aren’t many minutes to go around for the non-starters. But that could be a great sign for chemistry, which will be needed to overcome a lack of overall talent against the top teams in the Big 12.
