NCAA Basketball: Where will class of 2022 five-star guard Skyy Clark land?
By Ian Mumm
Memphis Tigers
Penny had to be one of the happiest coaches to hear of Clark’s transfer to Brentwood Academy. The move places the 5-star guard firmly in the backyard of the Memphis program and the 3rd-year coach will be looking to secure another top-20 player in every class since taking over. He has some strong arguments to make, as the on-court fit certainly fits Clark’s skillset well.
The Tigers utilize an up-tempo system under Penny and have a pronounced offensive plan around their guards. Every member of the backcourt has been given a green light to score the ball and take any shot in rhythm regardless of being in half-court sets or on the fast break. That was readily proven by Tyler Harris’ use in 2018 followed by the combined group of Lester Quinones and Boogie Ellis in 2019.
Clark would flourish in this setting, as it optimizes and highlights his ability to create on the offensive end. Notably, his ability to get into the lane will benefit the perimeter tendencies of Quinones and Ellis to get cleaner looks.
However, Clark’s impact in not one-sided, and his ability as a defender in one-on-one situations will drastically help the Tigers’ performances on that side of the floor. Add in Virginia Tech transfer Landers Nolley and 2020 5-star freshman Moussa Cisse and the 2021 roster could feature some elite talent for Penny to work with.
