NCAA Basketball: Which top program will land four-star SG D’Marco Dunn?
Texas Longhorns
Texas already has a trio of commits in the 2021 class, led by three-star combo guard Emarion Ellis. With a roster filled with upperclassmen all throughout, they’ll need to find some top-100 talent to remain competitive in the top half of the Big 12. With guards Courtney Ramey and Andrew Jones only juniors, Dunn would have to likely wait a year for more than 15 mpg and a potential starting role.
But the Longhorns would do well to land a scoring guard like Dunn who can provide consistent offense and shoot the ball at a high level. The program has been limited offensively and with a new core of guards, can succeed in the future. Yet Dunn will have to be a sound defender as well to be able to play in Coach Shaka Smart’s system.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Head coach Jerry Stackhouse is still looking for a real replacement for Saban Lee on the perimeter, having not landed a true off-guard in the 2020 class. The Commodores already have a pair of commitments in the 2021 group, including four-star guards Peyton Daniels and Gabe Watson.
How Watson and Dunn co-exist together would be interesting but Watson’s 6’6 size makes him a suitable wing as well to accommodate both prospects. This is a rebuilding program with a need for talent all over the roster, so Dunn can come in and be a potential star right out the gate.
Of course, the lack of winning would be an issue as well if Dunn picks Vanderbilt. But playing in the SEC and having a prominent role is an intriguing selling point the coaching staff can make. Of all of the options, North Carolina seems to be the favorite if they make a full push to land the top-100 shooter but Louisville should be taken very seriously as well.
