Texas A&M Aggies

Head coach Buzz Williams has a trio of senior guards (Jay Jay Chandler, Savion Flagg, and Quenton Jackson) to work with for the upcoming season, who are talented scorers. But none of them are true facilitators, which limits the Aggies’ real potential on offense. There’s a real chance that top-100 freshman Hassan Diarra could get major minutes if he can be that kind of distributor and set himself up to be the point guard of the future.

That would make it difficult for someone like Taylor to beat him out for the starting point guard spot. However, Texas A&M will still be in need of plenty other perimeter players and there is a possibility that Taylor can be the lead ball-handler, while Diarra plays off-ball. Coach Williams has no issue playing multiple point guards in his offense and he needs plenty of them to compete in the SEC.

Virginia Tech Hokies

With starting point guard Wabissa Bede and Kansas State grad transfer Cartier Diarra both seniors, Virginia Tech will be in a big need for at least one point guard in the 2021 class. They have a number of shooting guards already on the roster, including Jalen Cone, Nahiem Alleyne, along with four-star freshmen guards Darius Maddox and Joe Bamisile.

Cone has the potential of being a true facilitator but Taylor may be better suited. If that’s the case, then he has a clear pathway to minutes in the future for Virginia Tech. If not, the crowded backcourt may be too much for the three-star guard to overcome in terms of finding playing time as an underclassman. With the frontcourt more of a need, the Hokies may prioritize its scholarships there.

Of the five options, SMU and Texas A&M represent the best opportunities for immediate playing. Iowa State and Virginia Tech look like the more risky situation, while Oklahoma State has plenty of pros and cons that could change the outlook for Wade Taylor to consider. The Aggies are viewed as a potential favorite but look out for the Mustangs to land their first guard commit on the 2021 class.
